GCC Grounds Superintendent: Rick Johnson
UPDATES FROM RICK
As we approach the winter months, I would like to take the time to remind everyone that we do live in Western New York and winter is upon us. This being said, we will have to start spraying for snow mold this weekend as I try to wait until the last minute so the chemical lasts longer throughout the winter. This is a necessary evil that we all have to live with so we don't come out of winter with snow mold plastering our healthy/important turf. Also, yes there will always be some snow mold depending on how extensive our snow pack is, so don't crucify me if we do come out of winter with some. I will be pulling the pins and placing them into our temporary locations about 30 yards short of the putting greens. I will do this once the temps are in the 30's and 40's on a regular basis or long durations of precipitation due to the greens not growing anymore and no recovery from all regular play. This does not mean the pins will not go back into the greens if we get an extended period of warm weather. I will always try my best to keep the greens open as long into the season as possible. In years passed we have closed the facility down with no play at all, so please remember we are trying to extend your golf season more than usual. I hope everyone can understand that these decisions are made for the health of our turf for next season. I will keep everyone posted on when the temporaries will be put in place as we are all trying our best to communicate with the membership with the systems we have at hand. This being said, please refer to my Twitter/X page as there is updates and pictures of projects we are doing on the course at Gowanda Country Club @GowandaCC. or you can click on the Twitter icon at the bottom of the screen.
